  • 4 egg whites
  • 2 sticks of butter (room temperature)
  • 1 1/4 cups sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup milk (room temperature)
  • 1/2 cup sour cream (room temperature)
  • 1/2 cup shortening (Crisco)
  • 6 cups sifted powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (177°C). Butter and flour three 6-inch cake pans and line them with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together cake flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda until well combined.
  3. In another small bowl, mix the milk, sour cream, and vanilla extract; set aside.
  4. In a stand mixer, beat the butter and sugar on medium speed until creamy. Gradually add the egg whites while mixing on low speed until fully incorporated.
  5. Alternate adding the dry ingredients and milk mixture to the butter-sugar mixture, mixing until just combined.
  6. Pour batter evenly into prepared pans and bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let cool before removing from pans.
