  • 2 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp fine salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 1/4 cups buttermilk, room temperature
  • 2/3 cup vegetable or canola oil
  • 2 squirts of green gel food coloring
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 1 1/2 cups unsalted butter, room temperature (for frosting)
  • 1/2 cup full-fat cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1 Tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp fine salt
  • 8 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 Tbsp heavy whipping cream
  • Electric Green Gel Food Coloring
  • Black Gel Food Coloring

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare two 9-inch round cake pans with greaseproof paper.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together cake flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, beat the unsalted butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  4. Mix in buttermilk, vegetable oil, gel food coloring, vanilla extract, and vinegar until combined.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture until just combined.
  6. Divide batter evenly between prepared pans and bake for about 28 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Cool cakes completely before frosting with cream cheese buttercream made from beating room temperature butter and cream cheese with powdered sugar.
